The Social Committee creates entertaining and stimulating events that raise awareness about APIA issues.
Our innovative events range from parties and mixers to our annual event, cultureSHOCK, a showcase dedicated to display Asian American talent. In addition to hosting our own events that highlight the specific issues AAA works on, we also make it our mission to build solidarity by collaborating with other cultural affinity and social justice groups to create events that can further all of our missions.
cultureSHOCK is one of AAA’s largest events of the year and one of the highlights of the Columbia University student calendar. This event is a student-run charity performance; the first segment showcases both well-known and up and coming Asian American performers, followed by a fashion show that features both high end and eccentric, new, Asian American designers. cultureSHOCK embodies a movement towards a stronger appreciation for Asian American talent and art by showcasing a versatile blend of performances. This event draws audiences from current Columbia University students and alumni, students from numerous other colleges in the state area, and residents from all over the NYC metropolitan area. Past performers have included comedian Hari Kondabolu and spoken word poet Kelly Tsai.
