Laura is Class of 2012 at Columbia College, majoring in Undecided Studies. She came to Columbia from the far far away land of Shelton, Connecticut, where she enjoyed playing badminton and whiffleball. She also enjoys baking, reading, photography, journalism and nutella.
Almost Complete Bio
Laura Ly, a native of Shelton, CT, is in the class of 2012 at Columbia College. While she is currently undecided in her major, she is considering studies in comparative literature, sociology, and human rights. Laura presently serves as the Political Chair for AAA and is interested in exploring topics such as Asian Americans as targets in humor, examining harmful perceptions of Asian Americans propagated by media, and strengthening cohesion and support between various APIA ethnic groups.
In addition to her involvement with AAA, Laura also serves as a facilitator for ROOTEd (Reaching Ourselves and Others Through Education), which holds weekly discussions on various topics such as mental health, family structure, and social identity and their relationships with power and privilege. She is a reporter for the Columbia Daily Spectator and traveled to Peru over Spring Break with Rotaract to perform community service. She also participates in the Columbia Mentoring Initiative.
As a student at Shelton High School, Laura founded the Asian Club and SFAR (Students for First Amendment Rights) and was a member of the Interact and French Clubs. She also served as News Editor for Gael Winds, her school’s newspaper. Laura takes pride in the fact that her hometown has the only wiffleball factory in the world (and is thus an ardent proponent of the sport). She also enjoys impromptu dance parties, watching The Office, and going on adventures.
Laura is the founder of Crossroads, AAA's conference for Asian Americans high school students.
